Productsmustcometomarketquickly,bemorereliableandcostless.Theproblemisthatstatisticalmeasurestaketime.Thereisaclearneedforactionableinformationabouttherobustnessordurabilityofaproductearlyinthedevelopmentprocess.InaFailureModeVerificationTest(FMVT),theanalysisisnotstatisticalbutisdesignedtochecktwoassumptions.First,thatthedesigniscapableofproducingaviable
productfortheenvironmentsapplied.Second,thatagooddesignandfabricationoftheproductwouldlastforalongperiodoftimeunderallofthestressesthatitisexpectedtoseeandwouldaccumulatestressdamagethroughouttheproductina
uniformway.Testingaproductinthiswayleadstothreemeasuresoftheproduct’sdurability:(1)designmaturity,theratiobetweentimetofirstfailureandtheaveragetimebetweenfailuresafterthefirstfailure;(2)technologicallimit,thetimeunder
testatwhichfixingadditionalfailureswouldnotprovideasignificantimprovementinthelifeoftheproduct;and(3)failuremodehistogram,whichindicatesthe
repeatabilityoffailuresinaproduct.UsingtechniqueslikeFMVTcanprovideameansofbreakingthetyrannyofstatisticsoverdurabilityandreliabilitytestinginacompetitivebusinessclimate.
