When Is This Standard Used?
British Standard BS 6853 is the code of practice that applies to the design and construction
of passenger carrying trains (applicable to new vehicles and also substantial changes to existing vehicles). It should be noted, this standard does NOT apply to London Underground applications (though many of the tests are the same).
What Products Need To Be Tested?
The standard can be applied to almost all fixed products which may be used on the rolling
stock (the standard is not intended to cover stations or tunnels).
What Tests Need To Be Conducted?
The code of practice divides products into fourteen different product categories. For each
category, a number of tests (generally three or four) are required in order to assess the products’ flammability, smoke density and toxic fume production properties. The tests
required by the standard were selected since these methods were deemed to be the most appropriate when the end use of the product was considered.
The acceptance criteria are applied at three different levels – ‘vehicle categories’. The level your product must achieve is dependant upon the operating environment of the train. Trains operating underground must meet more stringent criteria than overground trains.
To enable Eoxva Warringtonfire to advise you of the tests your product must be subjected to and the acceptance criteria it must achieve, we will require information relating to the end use of your product. The below provides guidance as to what tests are likely to be required for different products, but for a definitive list of tests and confirmation of the performance requirements please contact us.
