Youmusthaveeightyearsofon-the-jobexperienceinoneormoreoftheareasoftheCertifiedReliabilityEngineerBodyofKnowledge.Aminimumofthreeyearsofthisexperiencemustbeinadecision-makingposition.“Decision-making”isdefinedastheauthoritytodefine,execute,orcontrolprojects/processesandtoberesponsiblefortheoutcome.Thismayormaynotincludemanagementorsupervisorypositions.
IfyouarenoworwerepreviouslycertifiedbyASQasaQualityEngineer,QualityAuditor,SoftwareQualityEngineer,orQualityManager,experienceusedtoqualifyforcertificationinthesefieldsoftenappliestocertificationasaReliabilityEngineer.
Ifyouhavecompletedadegree*fromacollege,university,ortechnicalschoolwithaccreditationacceptedbyASQ,partoftheeight-yearexperiencerequirementwillbewaived,asfollows(onlyoneofthesewaiversmaybeclaimed):
Diplomafromatechnicalortradeschool—oneyearwillbewaived
Associatedegree—twoyearswaived
Bachelor’sdegree—fouryearswaived
Master’sordoctorate—fiveyearswaived

ReliabilityManagement—Havebasicknowledgeandskillstounderstandreliabilityprogramrequirements,planning,definitions,training,andorganizationalresourcestoachievethoserequirementswithintheconstraintsoflife-cycleissuesandcosts.
ProbabilityandStatisticalTools—Haveanunderstandingofbasicprobabilityandstatisticaltoolstoanalyzeproductlifecycle.Thisincludestheproperapplicationofprobabilitydistributions,Paretoconcepts,toleranceandconfidenceintervals,sample-sizedetermination,andregressionanalysis.
ModelingandPrediction—Beabletodevelopmodelsandpredict,analyze,andinterpretthereliabilitysystemusingblockdiagrams,apportionment,andsimulationstocompareresultswithavailablefielddata.
DataCollection,Analysis,andCorrectiveAction—Collectappropriatedatatodefine,identify,analyze,correct,andpreventpotentialsystemfailures.BeabletoimplementFRACAS(failurereporting,analysis,andcorrective-actionsystem),rootcause,andtrendanalysis.
ReliabilityToolsinDesignandDevelopment—Beabletoestablishproductreliabilityrequirements;beabletounderstandandusethereliabilitytoolslistedintheBOK.Beabletoidentifyandcontrolcriticalparts,services,andproducts.
MaintainabilityandAvailability—Understandtheprinciplesofmaintainabilityandavailabilityoverthelifecycleoftheproductorsystem.Demonstrateabasicknowledgeoftestability,humanfactor,andmaintenanceactivities.
ReliabilityTesting—Developreliabilitytestplansthatcovertheexpectedcustomeruseenvironmentandoperationalconditions.Identifyappropriateaccelerationstressesandmethods,analyzeandinterprettheresultsofthesedevelopmenttests.Understandthecost-effectiveuseofproductionscreeningmethods.
ProductSafetyandLiability—UpholdASQcodeofethics.Usereliabilityanalysistoolsandcustomerfeedbacktoidentifyandanalyzepotentialsafetyissuesforaproduct.Recommendtheappropriateactionnecessarytoresolvesafetyissues.Haveaknowledgeofapplicableregulatoryrequirementsandtheimplementationofclosed-loopcorrective/preventive-actionsystems.
