Abstract
Holisticassessmentsrepresentamethodofincorporatingallphasesofstructurallife
intoasingleframework."Safe-life"and"DamageTolerance"designconceptsdonot
becomeobsoletebytheHolisticLifeAssessmentMethod(HLAM),rather,theyarea
subsetofHLAMandalwayscaneitherbeusedasabaselineanalysis,orbetailoredto
meetindividualcustomerneeds.
Thepowerofholisticassessmentisthattheanalystcancapturetheadditionalphases
ofstructurallifeinappropriatestructurallocations.Itsfundamentalengineeringbasis
allowsholisticassessmentstobesupplemented,benchmarked,andcorrelatedwith
manufacturedstatesandwithNDImethods.Duringcorrelationofassessmentsand
testorfielddata,itisimperativethatrules,procedures,andinconsistenciesbefully
documented.TheultimategoalofHLAMistohaveasetof“freely-available”rules
(withengineeringfundamentalsasthebasis)suchthatsmoothcoupons,notched
coupons,components,fielddata,andfull-scaletestresultscanbepredictable,
includingtheiranticipatedstatisticalvariations.
UsingthefundamentalsoftheInitialDiscontinuityState(IDS),concurrentfatigueand
agedegradationinteractionsthatcausediscontinuityprogressions,andemerging
conceptsinfailurescenarios,HLAMcanimproveuponsafety,fleetreadiness,and
maintenancecostmanagement.TheHLAMconceptenablesassessmentsofstructural
systemsregardlessoftheirmaintenancephilosophy.UsersoftheHLPMframework
candeveloptheirownspecificallytailoredassessmentfromaholisticassessment,
baseduponindividualcriteriaandrequirements. |
