ThecalculationofMeanTimeBetweenFailure(MTBF)isoftenrequiredasanaidinpredictingthereliabilityofelectronicequipmentunderdifferentoperatingconditions.
ThevalueofMTBFforacomponentisbaseduponfailure-ratemodelswhichhavebeendevelopedinconjunctionwithMIL-HDBK-217E.TheMTBFisnotaguaranteeofuseableproductlifetime,butisaguideforplanningtheoperationaluseoftheequipment.Theaccuracyofthevaluescalculatedisdependentuponthevalidityofthemodels.Also,thevalueschosenfortheoperatingparametersmustberepresentativeoftheoperatingparametersduringactualuse

Inthecaseoffiberopticdatacommunicationequipment,anareaofprimaryconcernistheMTBFvaluesforthediscreteLightEmittingDiodes(LEDs)andphotodiodesusedinthefiberoptictransmittersandreceivers.ThedeterminationofthepredictedMTBFforanLEDor
photodiodeisacalculationusingthepartfailure-ratemodelforoptoelectronicdevicesasfoundinsection5.1.3.10ofMIL-HDBK-217E.
