DESCRIPTION:
CommonlyusedmaintenancestrategiesvaryfromsimpleonessuchasCorrectiveMaintenance(CM),whichisperformeduponsystemfailure,toPreventiveMaintenance(PM)wheremaintenanceactionsaretakenatscheduledtimeintervals.Bothstrategies,however,havelimitations.Recentadvancesinsensors,controlsystems,softwareengineering,andcommunicationtechnologyhavepromptedmanufacturerstomovetowardstheconditionmonitoringofsystemhealth.Maintenanceisperformedbasedontheobservedsystemcondition,whichisreferredtoasCondition-BasedMaintenance(CBM).ThispresentationgivesacomprehensiveintroductiontoCBM,andintroducesamethodforCBMschedulingforsystemswithmultiplefailuremodes.Itisobservedinsomeapplicationsthatthehazardratecorrespondingtoeachfailuremodedependsonbothtimeandsystemstate.Thesystemstatestochasticallydegrades,andthedegradationrateisoftenafunctionoftimeandthedegradationlevelatthatparticulartime.Amaintenancealarmisusedtosignalwhenthedegradationreachesathresholdvalue.Anewjointmodelisdevelopedforthestochasticallydependenttime-to-maintenanceduetosystemdegradationandtime-to-failureofdifferentfailuremodes.Themodelisthenutilizedtoobtaintheoptimumthresholdvaluethatmaximizesthesystem’savailabilityoveritslifecycle,or,minimizesthelong-runcostperunittime.Aillustrativeexample,usingreal-lifedatafromareliabilitytestofcommunicationsystems,isprovidedtodemonstratetheapplicationoftheapproach.

Dr.Liuisapost-docresearcherworkingwithRutgersUniversity,USA,andQatarUniversity,Qatar.HereceivedhisPh.Ddegree(IndustrialEngineering)in2009fromtheNationalUniversityofSingapore.Beforethat,heobtainedhisB.Eng(MechanicalEngineering)in2004fromHarbinInstituteofTechnology(HIT),China,andspentonesemesteratHongKongUniversityofScienceandTechnology(HKUST)asanexchangestudent.Hisresearchfocusesonreliabilityengineeringandappliedstatistics,andhehaspublishedinpeerreviewedjournalsincludingJournalofQualityTechnology,IEEETransactionsonReliability,etc.HeisthewinneroftheRAMS2011RalphA.Evans/P.K.McElroyAwardforBestPaper.
