Claimforecastingandearlywarningtechniquesarenotnew,buttheapplicationofreliabilitygrowthmodelingtoprovideenhancedpredictivecapabilityisarelativelyunexploredarea.Inparticular,attentionwillberestrictedtotheproblemofmakingforecastsfromlimiteddataearlyinaproduct’slifecycle.
Fittingastatisticalmodeltoacompletesetofdataisrelativelyeasycomparedtoforecastingfromaverysmallsampleearlyinaproductlifecycle.Likewise,correctlydetectingaqualityorreliabilityproblemfromwarrantyclaimsduringthe4th,5thor6thmonthofproductionismuchmoredifficultthanbythe10thor11thmonth.Yet,earlyoninthelifecycleisthemostcrucialtimeperiodtodetectaproblemsoastocorrectitandremovethepotentialproblemfromeverreachingthecustomer,therebylimitingthefinancialimpactviapotentialwarrantyclaims. |
