HALT,theacronymforHighlyAcceleratedlifetestingwhichGreggK.Hobbscoinedin1988afterhavingusedthetermDesignRuggedizationforseveralyears.InHALT,everystimulus(stresssource)ofpotentialvalueisusedunderacceleratedtestconditionsduringthedesignphaseofaproductinordertofindtheweaklinksinthedesignandfabricationprocess.

HALThasbeenatechniquewithbroadpotentialforimprovingthequalityofnewproductdesigns,anddramaticallyreducingthetimeittakestodevelopthem.However,theactualuseofHALThasbeenlimitedformostparttoelectronicsandsmallelectro-mechanicaldevicesduetolimitsoftestingequipmentsavailabletodesignengineers.Asaresult,companiesdevelopinglargermechanicalparts,componentsandsystemshavecontinuedtorelyonconventionallongtermlifetestingmethodologythatcantakeweeks,evenmonthstoidentifydesignflaws.

InCHALTtheexistingdesignisputtotestandthepointatwhichthelastfailureoftheproductoccurs(TerminalFailure),isusedasthestartingtestinglevelfortheredesigns.Thus,HALT,HASS,CHALTandFMVTmethodsproposetosetanewlevelofparadigminthefieldofreliabilitytestinganddoesensureahigherqualityofproductdevelopmentandhenceasafertomorrow.
