Introduction
Reliabilityisameasureoftheabilityofasolidstateproducttocontinuetomeetdatasheetspecifications
overtime.Inanypopulationofsolidstateproductsthereisarangeinthetimetofailure,whichisthetime-to-failure
distribution.Sincethetypicaltime-to-failuredistributionwillhaveacentralcharacteristicintheorderof
hundredsorthousandsofyears,meansmustbederivedtoassessthetime-to-failuredistributioninrealtime.
Failuremechanismmodelsprovideaphysicalandmathematicalrepresentationofhowthetime-to-failure
distributionwillchangebychangingsomefactor.
Reliabilityassessmentandqualificationsystemsconsistofthefollowing:
a)alistofapplicablefailuremodes,failuremechanisms,failurekinetics,andcauses;
b)afailuremodel,includingasappropriatethevalidityandcorrectnessofthemodel;
c)ameanstoacceleratethefailureprocess;
d)alistofcriteriafortheacceptabilityofthefailurerates;
e)thedefinitionsand/orcriteriaforafailure,e.g.,whenisadeviationafailure.
Reliabilityassessmentsystemsprovideeconomicbenefitforbothmanufacturersandusers.Manufacturers
canquantifythereliabilityoftheirproductsinordertounderstandwarrantyandothercostsassociated
withpotentialreliabilityfailures.Userscanestimatethereliabilityofsystemsusingsolidstateproductsin
ordertoquantifycostsassociatedwithsystemoperationorfailures. |
